The History of Drums

Music and musical instruments are an extremely important part of human history. The use of rhythm and song has long been used to express meaning, and feeling and accompany rituals.

Music has been part of human life for as long as anyone can trace. Early civilizations of humans used music as a way to communicate and express feelings. Out of all of the musical instruments that we see in our society today and use on a regular basis, there is one instrument that stands out in musical history, the drum.

The history of drums is interesting and unique. When you examine this instrument historically, you will find that drums have had a place in almost all cultures around the globe. Variations of drums and drum sets occurred in many different cultures, the standard variety of a drum consisted simply of a hollowed out log or gourd with a piece of skin stretched taunt. Different sizes of gourds and logs created different sounds and beats.

The African Influence

In most African cultures, drums were very important in the use of rituals and religious ceremonies. The people of different African tribes relied on the use of drums to express themselves and when the slave trade began, the drums made the journey across the ocean as well.

African drums and drummers provided a unique sound that heavily influenced Western Rock and Roll music. Those same rhythms and beats still provide a strong influence in today's sounds.

The Early Drum Set

When it was discovered that one player could play two or more drums at the same time, people started placing groups of drums together for one musician to play. These groups were comprised of an assimilation of drums of different cultures and from all around the globe. Cymbals and tom tom drums were brought in from China and the size was adjusted to allow for ease of play when played with drumsticks.

In the early 1930's, musicians slowly discovered with the proper drum placement and a lot of practice, one musician could handle a set of drums, and an entire band of drum players was not required anymore. Thus, a basic kit evolved and took place.

In An Early Kit

The early drum kits were simple in their design, they typically consisted only of:

1) A bass and foot pedal
2) A snare drum
3) Tom Toms
4) A hi hat cymbal
5) One or two sets of hanging cymbals

The Evolution Of The Drum Set

In the 1930's the drum set was heavily influenced by the sounds of the time, and the early forms of Rock and Roll music. The sounds had a strong basic beat backing them.

In the 1950's as Rock and Roll music began to develop, the sounds became more complex and likewise, the drum sets became more evolved, with new additions added to them. Rockers began expanding the drum kits adding more cymbals and tom toms drums to them. In addition, as time went on, electronic drums were added to the drum kits as well. All of these additions allowed the musicians to expand their sounds and diversify their music.

Types Of Drum Kits

In the past, as drums evolved and drum kits developed, new companies were formed and products were fine-tuned and made better. The Ludwig Drum Company is known as one of the most influential and historical drum companies of our time.

The Ludwig drum company was started by a young man who enjoyed playing the drums. He could not find a bass pedal that would hold up to his intense drumming style. He shopped around everywhere and could not find an appropriate pedal, so he fashioned one out of wood. The pedal was superior to anything else on the market. His brother, felt that an even stronger pedal could be created out of a metal product, so they teamed up to create an even better bass pedal. Thus, the Ludwig Drum Company was born.

Ringo Starr, the famous drummer for The Beatles used a Ludwig drum set and was known for preferring the Ludwig drums. He is said to still own the original Ludwig drum set that he played with the Beatles.

There have been many other types of drum kits and company names that have played an important and influential role in the history of drums. Yamaha, Pearl, Tama and Gretsch are all famous brand names whose drums and drum kits have helped form the drum set, as we know it today.

The Future For Drums

What does the future hold for drum sets? No one can be sure. However, with the creation of more and more technology, we can be sure that the sounds will evolve even more. A combination of new sounds and traditional will always be found. And the limit for drum set creation will simply be the imagination of the musicians.

Rock+Drums= sex

I believe the best example of sexual energy expressed in sound is Led Zeppelin. Whenever they played live Jimmy Page seemed to stagger around the stage as if he was drunk, but he wasn't drunk. It was just that the hurricane of sexual force that blew out of his amp was too much for even Jimmy to withstand. Now I'm sure that most people are aware that rhythmically beating drums awaken the sexual forces. Africans were despised and envied by white people because of the sexual way they danced to their own drum music. John Bonham, who was unquestionably the best rock and roll drummer who ever walked the face of this planet, pounded his drums with such power that Led Zep's sexual energy increased dramatically. Irresistible sexual energy in their music is only one of the many good reasons why I say that Zeppelin is the #1 Rock and Roll Band of All Time.

A debate rages on in the drumming world! You might think that the debate centers on brands of drums, or different styles of drums. However, you would be wrong. This debate centers on the use of electronic drums in the music industry.

There are two very strong opinions regarding the use of electronic drums or drum machines. Some musicians and music producers love the use of these kits. Others, hate them, and strongly disagree with the use of electric drum sets in the mainstream music industry.

Types Of Electric Drums

The main types of commonly used electric drums are:

1. Drum machines
2. Electric drum sets

Drum machines are a widely used type of electric machine that have become very popular in almost all types of music. A drum machine is a small box with buttons on it that can be programmed for a variety of different sounds, and beats. A drum machine can be programmed to play a continuous loop or simply a short set.

Advantages of Drum Machines:

1. Convenient and portable
2. Easily programmable
3. Simulate a variety of sounds
4. Excellent for faster beats

Because drum machines are so small, they are extremely convenient and portable which makes them a popular choice for many musicians. For some bands, if they have to hire a drummer for live shows, it can simply be much more cost effective to use a drum machine in place of a live drummer.

In fact, in some cases when a drummer has quit the band, the band will simply use a drum machine in place of the person. This strategy is more cost effective, and often easier than dealing with different personalities.

Drum machines can be programmed for almost any sound imaginable, and with a little practice, they are easily programmable. Today's drum machines can store a wide variety of beats, songs and programs. Therefore, an entire set can be programmed into these machines.

While electronic machines are not perfect for every type of music, they are often thought of as more effective than acoustic drums for dance music. The beats that are required for dance music are very fast and often a live drummer cannot keep up with them. In these situations, electronic machines are perfect.

Electronic Drum Sets

An electronic drum kit is another very popular form of technology that is used in drumming. These kits consist of one or more electric pads that are grouped together and create sounds when they are struck. Most of the time, traditional drumsticks are used for these kits.

Electronic drum sets can be programmed with a wide variety of sounds and can be made to sound very similar to an acoustic drum set. Often, one or two electronic drums are used alongside acoustic drums to simulate the sound of a missing drum. For example, if you do not want to lug around a large bass drum, an electric drum can be used in its place.

Controlling the volume on these sets is as easy as turning a knob to turn down the volume, which makes them the perfect drum set for apartment dwellers, or those musicians with roommates or cranky parents. Quiet practice is a big benefit of the electric drum.

Many argue that electric drum sets are tacky. Because they were first introduced in the 1980's, electric drums quickly got a reputation of being cheesy. In addition, many believe that the only thing that electronic drums are good for is for play, but not for real musicians.

The Argument Against Electric Drums

The biggest argument against electronic drum sets or drum machines is that they lack feeling. For many musicians, playing music is all about the feeling and emotion that they can project through their sounds. They argue that when you take a live drummer and replace them with a machine, you lack the feeling and the quality of emotion.

For some types of music such as jazz and soul, machines are not appropriate at all because these are genres that exude feeling and emotional meaning in the sounds created. Therefore, many musicians feel that it is extremely tacky to use a machine in these genres.

Although a drum machine is small and portable, you cannot improvise with a machine. It is programmed to play a loop and that is it. There is not room for any impromptu changes and the rest of the musicians must be on beat, or it will be very noticeable. A machine cannot accompany a soloist either. Moreover, one of the biggest arguments with a machine is that it is not very nice to look at!

Can authentic sounds truly be replicated by a machine? That question is the basis for another argument against electronic drums. Many believe that as good as they are, computers cannot recreate an authentic acoustic drum set. Critics claim that machines sound hollow and tinny and not at all like drums should sound.

What Is The Solution?

As with any argument, there will not be a one size fits all solution. The best solution for each individual and each band is to do what they like best, and what suits their sound. Many bands and musicians have created a compromise by using acoustic drums with a mixture of electronic drum pads and drum machines. By intermingling the two types of drums, you have the technology to create some new and interesting beats, as well as the authentic sound and emotional feel of acoustics. Perhaps a compromise is the best solution to this debate.

Stick your head in the wall

THe best advice I can give a young drummer is just practice, practice, practice.
I have a friend who wants to play the drums. He wants to sit down right now and play . . .without learning how to listen to parts. He wants to WRITE!
He plays in a band with three other young guys who feel the same way. They all know the same three or four power chords (and he the corresponding thump beats. They pooh pooh all the records from the thousands of hits of yesterday and today because they want to write their own. They will not try to learn because they say the parts are lame and they want to write good stuff - "with balls"! I told 'em "ever heard of Cream, Or Hendrix, Argent, Zeppling, Chicago or any body else from years gone by? Absolutely no interest . . .they think Green Day is full of complicated parts and want to "get real" as they say. "John Mayer is a sellout who plays cheese!"
Not being interested in listening and learning from those who have gone before is one of the greatest single mistakes and aspiring musician can make.
You've got to stick your head into the wall or corner , where ever you've got your kit, amp, keys whatever . . . set up . . .put on the phones and/or P.A. (or in my case in the '60's record player!!!) and blow your brains out learning alll the chops you can!
It is amazing how some young cats think they know it all withour paying any dues. I just don't remember thinking that way when we were that age. Seems like all the guys in my first band could'nt get enough practice, we weere all always listening and learning with our headsets and cranking out on our amps and speakers. So be it. We all eventually made our living playing music . . .something I doubt thse young cats will ever do unless they get their heads on straight and LEARN TO PLAY!!!

Rock'nRoll =sexual energy -what a concept !

"Rock and roll is sexual energy expressed in sound"

It all started with "Elvis the Pelvis". Why do you think all the girls started fainting all over this country when they heard Elvis' voice for the first time? It was because nobody had ever heard a man sing something like "All Shook Up" and it shook them to the core. Being sexy like that just came naturally for Elvis and the girls picked up on it immediately like some kind of sexual email was being sent directly into their brains! Other rock and roll stars followed in Elvis' steps very quickly. Jerry Lee Lewis knew what to do and he got himself into a great big ball of fire with his underage lover. Chuck Berry was another natural, and he also created some serious trouble simply because he was black and the white girls went for him big time. I think that may have been the first time that the pathetic and hung up white male population had to deal with the racial sex issue at this level.

Then The Beatles exploded. It was the Elvis phenomenon again except that all The Beatles really did was sing like gods, shake their mop top heads around and look adorable, and thousands of girls got wet panties at the very same time. The effect was enhanced by their memorable simple love songs because those young girls who were coming of age and dreaming about falling in love connected on the emotional level too. At first all they needed to write was "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Please Please Me" and millions of girls wanted to please them and hold something of theirs. The sexual message in their music was often very subtle but Ringo's driving beat made them want to get up and shake it all around.

Mick Jagger was another natural, just like Elvis. Right from the beginning, "The Lips" knew how to give and get Satisfaction and he followed that up with a long series of balls to the wall hits with strong sexual messages like "Play with Fire, "Live With Me" and the all time classic musical expression of sex, "Going Home". Strangely enough, it wasn't Mick who actually got all the girls into bed, it was Bill Wyman, the Stones' bass player. In his autobiographical book Bill told all, and his groupies totaled in the thousands. He never made it clear in his book exactly why that happened to him and not the same way to Mick who must have gotten and still be getting whoever he really wants to have. But it did happen and all Bill ever did was stand there completely still and play his bass guitar looking sort of sad and forlorn. There simply has to be a logical explanation for Bill's success, and I think I know what it is. (Don't ask, I won't tell).

Not much needs to be said about that most powerful sexual dynamo, Jim Morrison, who told all the girls to "Come on Baby Light My Fire" and before fainting dead away, they did whatever he wanted them to do. I'm not sure how many net surfers understand what "Back Door Man" is all about but the song itself says "the men don't know but little girls understand". Enough said on that one.

And then came Jimi Hendrix. The pun is intended. Jimi had to have been the sexiest black musician of all time and few girls didn't want to be his "Foxy Lady". They actually used to line up outside his dressing room backstage and Jimi would come out and choose one or more at a time. He was another one who simply couldn't help himself, although he did understand exactly what he was doing and why. Later on in his career he stopped his sexy performance on purpose because he was a serious musician who wanted people to appreciate his playing and his songwriting for being as creative as it was. He felt that his sex show was getting in the way of that kind of appreciation so after the Experience broke up, he pretty much stood still playing with his eyes shut because he didn't even want to see the girls out there anymore.

The lucky drum mic

Hey L.A. This is the dog and I have a great story for your blog . . .

My bud, Brian from "Miss-Anne-Throp" came up to me today and said, "I had the greatest day ever at a garage sale" I asked him what about? "I picked up this" . . .and showed me the most beautiful '50's (era) KENT hi Z mic I've ever seen. It is a ribbon mic with a beautiful art-deco chrome finish and boy does it have sound. It is the real deal, I'd say bout 1953 or so. We recorded his 22" Pearl maple kick with it. It has the anold cord . . .a two -pin! that needs replacing but a bit of duct tape and we were off and recording.
Brian didn't even know what he had but now he does. Drums never had that fat sound in the old days, usually too dull due to using cardboard or towels over to stop ring, but now with e-mad heads and the like, and close-miking techniques de-rigeur . . .that thing sounds fine!! Almost like a 57 but with probably a bit less natural bass which we just eq'd up and got the sound we wanted.
Too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore, I doubt if it sold for more thatn about 45 dollars in the day. I don't know the model but will reasearch it and let you know. later . . .drumdog

Chippewa music and dance (drums)

Debwedamoen Oshki Anishinaabe (English translation: The Sounding Truth of the Young People) -- a youth outreach program of the Anishinaabe Cultural Center & Gallery in Detroit lakes, Minnesota -- respectfully invites the public to their first performance of Anishinaabe (sometimes referred to as Ojibwa or Chippewa) music and dance on Thursday, May 24 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Anishinaabe Cultural Center and Gallery in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Children, youth, parents, and especially Elders are welcome.

An Anishinaabe feast of celebration will be held at 5:00 (the public is encouraged to participate), with the performance starting at 6:00. The youth group will present Anishinaabe drum and dance, including the fancy dance, traditional dance, shawl dance and playful dances with partners. The performers will be wearing colorful regalia that they have designed and sewn themselves, with the assistance of group leaders. Brian Goodwin, Anishinaabe Cultural Center's Youth Coordinator, will interpret the Anishinaabe history of the drum and explain the various dances to the audience.

This special event kicks-off the Anishinaabe Cultural Center's summer-long series of weekly drum and dance performances, to be held every Thursday at 2:00 p.m., from June 7 through August 23. In addition to hosting special events like the drum and dance performances, the Gallery displays and sells traditional and contemporary Native American art and crafts, books, music tapes and CD's, and authentic hand harvested wild rice. The Gallery's new summer hours (May 12 through September 3) are: Monday - Friday 9 - 7:30, Saturday 9 - 3 and Sunday noon - 5.

The Anishinaabe Cultural Center & Gallery is conveniently located in Detroit Lakes, just north of U.S. Highway 10 and just east of Roosevelt on 8th Street SE. Music Style And Audience

How do you classify your music?

I don't! If asked I say I write songs. I am always fascinated finding out what other people make of my songs but for me I feel that a song is basically a set of words, the lyrics, and a tune. I write my words first and then find a tune on the guitar and that is the basic song but how it turns out later is another matter. All songs are open to being arranged differently and can be given different production. They all start out as words and music and in my own creative process I write the lyrics first, so in the beginning was the word!

Do you target a specific audience? If so, who?

Not really, I just sing my songs and if people like them then I consider that to that degree I have been successful as an artist. I do find I get a better reaction from rock fans rather than 'folkies' though.

What performance venues are you currently exploring?

Mainly festivals. I have been the compere for the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival for the last 2 years, as well as playing there, and followed this with doing the same at It's Jo and Danny's Green Man Festival in Brecon.

Musical Instruments - Recording - Computer Hardware - Software

What musical instruments do you play?

Guitar and harmonica, keyboards, penny whistle and Jew's harp enough to have used them on recordings. Kazoo too but that is so simple it doesn't really count as 'playing.' I regard my vocals as an instrument as well.

Do you record in a home studio?

I haven't got one, only Cool Edit and a microphone but I have used the home-studios of friends.

What equipment and software do you use?

Various. It all depends on what is available. I have various guitars but I mainly use a semi-acoustic Fleetwood jumbo for practice and gigging. The only computer music software I have used myself is Cool Edit. I must confess that I don't know much about creating digital music and am much happier with a guitar and mic. This doesn't stop me collaborating with other musicians online who are skilled with this new technology, and in fact I have a song called 'Electric Bard,' which is a 3-way collaboration between myself and EXLectiX from America and Catherine Duc from Australia. I wrote the words and did the vocals and my collaborators created the music and produced it. Also, the highly talented musician, Ed Drury, has added his music and arrangements to a series of my poems. This sort of thing, to my mind, is one of the wonderful things about the world of music available online.

Musical Background -Influences

How did you get started playing music?

I would have been aged about 12 and I was listening to pop and some rock bands and also soul and Tamla and this would have been when I was first thinking about it. This was the time of the 'Mersey sound.' Then the psychedelic '60s arrived and the folk protest movement and as a teenager I was inspired by Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Cat Stevens, Neil Young and many other singer/songwriters, as well as the whole idea of an alternative society. I would say that I fancied myself as following in these singer/songwriters' footsteps if I could. By the age of 16 I was going to festivals and gigs and I made my own start at playing guitar and writing songs and poetry. Initially it was an effort to impress girls because I was painfully shy. I had decided that I wasn't that impressed by the Beatles, although John Lennon is one of my 'heroes,' and The Stones were far more my sort of rock band. Neil Young was my favorite guitarist then and still is. Other acts that I really liked and still do are Hendrix, David Bowie, Roy Harper, Kate Bush, Van Morrison, Dory Previn, Jefferson Airplane, Nico, Lou Reed, Donovan, Jethro Tull, Bob Marley, Neil Diamond, the Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett, Joni Mitchell, Bridget St John, Tyrannosaurus and T. Rex, Roxy Music and many many more. Then in the mid '70s Punk and New Wave happened and a lot of the energy of the movement I found inspiring. I saw a lot of the bands then like The Clash, Boomtown Rats, the Stranglers, Patti Smith and others.

What has influenced your music the most?

All those acts I have mentioned above, along with many more modern ones and genres of music like the Blues, Soul, R&B, Folk, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz, Experimental and anything else that I've spent time listening too. My inspiration for songs though is very varied and just reflects my life I think.

Music And Internet Marketing

How has the Internet effected you as a musician?

In a big way: I used to be heavily involved in music networking via the snail mail with all the fanzines and small press and the casssette culture which gave way to CDs, but I seem to have phased most of that out because the Internet is a lot easier, cheaper and faster to use.

Also, I have made very many good friends, whom I have met via OMDs and at bbs, and discovered so much excellent music. As well as these things it has given me a means of collaborating with people all over the world.

When did you start marketing your music on the Internet?

In about 1997 when I first began to understand IT and to have access to computers.

What has been the most effective way to market your music on the Internet?

Via OMDs and Bulletin Boards. My favorite OMD was mp3.com and I haven't seen any other site which has offered so much. The stations it gave acts the option of creating was a great way to promote your music and that of other acts you enjoyed, as well as finding new music.

Musicians And The Future

What does the future hold for you?

More collaborations, more festivals...but as to where my music will take me I really don't know! I have just written my first song in Spanish and am learning the language, so who knows where my path will lead?

What makes you go to that space where you continue to do what you do for hour after hour, when you forget the need to eat and drink. What is it that inspires you?

Some artists suggest that it is their imagination that inspires them. The need to tell the world what is going on in their heads. The links that they make. The different ways of viewing the world. After all literature, music and visual arts are all about the originator communicating with the rest of us.

So inspiration appears to be linked with the need to communicate with others. It may not be in words. But we feel it is about communication. What about you? What are you inspired to communicate?

Inspiration is linked to innovation. To introduce new ways of seeing things. Inspiration is a way of understanding the essence of ourselves. Understanding who we are and what we dream about. Whatever it is that inspires you, it is the core of your very being. So what is it?

Perhaps the role of inspiration is to wake us up from a big sleep. A sleep where everyday is the same. Where we contribute to the world but at the same time we don’t contribute because there is nothing of us in there. Perhaps the role of inspiration is to get us to become involved with the world rather than be a bystander, an observer.

This was definitely the situation for Alice Foote MacDougall, an American Business woman before the second world war. Like many of her era she was driven by her husband’s financial failure and the necessity of supporting her three young children.

To be the inspiration is more than to be the tool. To create the world,
a greater thing than to reform it.

When we tap into whatever it is that inspires us we become a full member of society. We are able to share our ideas, thoughts and emotions. As we share and show our dreams, emotions and ideas and thoughts then we gradually become to understand the person we truly are.

So, the role of inspiration is more than we first thought. More that just a drive to action. It actually enables you to understand the very essence of yourself and what you have to offer the world.

All drums are tunable with my specially designed hardware construction. They can be tuned quickly and simply by turning the tuning hooks with a small end wrench. ( I like the appearance of African laced drums but I haven't seen many that didn't need continual tuning). My hardware design is unobtrusive and out of the way of the hands when playing the drum.

Bang! Bam! Bang! Have you always wanted to play the drums, but are afraid your neighbors would call the police on you?

Do you want to bang on your drum all day, but are worried you'll drive you loved ones away. Don't worry; your dreams of becoming the next great drummer can still come true! There are quick and easy ways to help keep your family, friends, and neighbors happy while still allowing you to drum it up. So, grab your sticks and take some notes because it's just about drum time!

Communicate

The key to any successful relationship is communication and this is no less true when you're talking about your drums. Think for a moment about who might be affected by your choice to drum? Typically, housemates and neighbors top the list.

Before you start banging on those drums all day, consider having a chat with these folks and see if you can work out a way for everybody to happily coexist in Drumworld. See if there are better and worse times for you to drum. If you think it might help (and you're willing), invite the person for a drum lesson. Once a person gets the beat into their own hands, you'd be amazed at how quickly a dissenter becomes a fan!

Go electronic

If you live in a small space and have sound-sensitive neighbors, a drum machine or electronic kit might be best for you. With the ability to moderate the volume, you're sure to keep your neighbors happier than if you were drumming it out on a full set. When you go electric, you enter a whole new world of drumming; a world where the beat can all be in your head…headphones, that is!

Create a quiet room

The professionals who have unlimited cash supplies create fancy soundproof rooms complete with high-tech acoustic materials on the walls, floors, and ceiling. But, do you know what? You can create your own "quiet" room with a little ingenuity and a bit of elbow grease. Of course, yours won't necessarily be the height of elegance and hipness, but it'll do the trick.

Did you know that carpet scraps provide an excellent soundproofing medium? Visit your local carpet seller and grab as many free scraps as possible. Then, layer these on the wall of your music "studio" (e.g., your garage). Be sure to focus on the walls and ceiling as these will be where most of your sound escapes and resonates. The more layers, the better!

Invest in cymbal mutes and drum practice discs

If you're not quite ready to go full shag carpet on your walls and ceilings, consider investing in cymbal mutes and practice discs for your drums. Becoming more and more popular, these drumming accessories make a world of difference in the sound department. By significantly reducing the amount of sound your drum set sends out, you might find that your neighbors and housemates don't even know you have a drum!

Go ahead, bang on that drum all day-just make it quiet to keep your friends and family happy! No matter how you do it, quieting your drums can not only save your relationships and your standing with your neighbors, but can also help you to appreciate the sound that your kit makes when it's not muted.

Recovering the old tubs

One of the best things I've done lately is to recover my old '63 Slingerland set with the vinyl rolls of contact paperstuff you can buy at any paint store. The real trick is to make sure you take off all the old wrap (in my case "sparking PINK pearl" boy, Howdy!!
You need to really scrape that stuff off and then sand it all down smooth or else you'll get bumps when you put on the new covering.
Anyway, I did all that and then very carfully measured the circumference of the individual tubs and laid it all out and used gorilla glue in addition to the self-backed adhesive that the stuff comes with in the roll. Then after your done and before you reattach all the hardware, put on a thick coat or two of "Marine Varnish". This stuff hardens like plastic and gives it a real nice shine and protects too. Don't use verathane or any of that spray crap as it's too messy and doesn't dry evenly on a set of drums because of the curvature. At least I had lousy luck with it, so use the marine varnish with a good brush. It is slower and ya gotta let it dry between coats . . .but it is worth it.
Anyway, this past spring I played a gig outdoors at a blues festival and got noticed by the local paper for my smart-looking "vintage" Slingerlands with the cool pastel mountain scenes. It really doesn't matter what you do the kit in, I mean I've also done black and white checkerboards, a pretty cool horsey, cowboy number for my old country set ('68 Rogers) and so forth. Hey it'll get ya noticed behind the posers and front men quicker than any "new" hot shot set I've seen. I even signed autographs and handed out a bunch of drumsticks with my name on them to the kids at the festival. Heck Fire it was fun and I owe it to my new coverings on an old trusy set. Go for it and have fun!

Mac Club Benefit

J.T. and the Tourists, the great retro-rock band from San Francisco, will be featured at the Towne Club(Stadium district)this Saturday. Most folks who lived through the '60's, will remember JT and his bandmates as the band from the greatest era of rock who toured with Biggest names in the music business for years under a variety of psuedonym band-names. I have heard they were on the road touring the world for over seven continuous years at one stretch, did not even have home addresses, just the bus, plane, train, cars . . .whatever, RV's etc.! And they lived! (except for poor Kenny)
In this day of head-banging abysmalness, it's such a relief to hear a band that covers all the hits, (they do play a cou;le of their own records, but never had a major hit themselves. With their own style, the music still sounds like the record. The special touch that only accomplished musicians can give. It still rocks and has a great groove, but no devil worship and no baggy pants that look like a buttload.

Taikoz Drumming

In life we all have dreams and goals, aspirations to follow a certain path that will lead to social achievements and personal growth. We all hope to fulfill a destiny where we can put all of our efforts into one activity or more that helps the world in one way or another. Recently I went to see a musical group called Taikoz and I believe I was witness to a certain level of human achievement that was simply mind-blowing. These people have obviously trained and practiced so much that they have reached a level of mastery. They have taken the human life experience to the limit.

Taikoz are a multicultural group based in Australia who focuses on the ancient art of Japanese Taiko drumming. One of the group’s members, Riley Lee, also plays a traditional Japanese bamboo flute called a shakuhachi. He is world renown for being the first non-Japanese person to be given the title Grand Master of this sacred Zen Buddhist instrument.

Let me give you an idea about this concert. It was held in a relatively small opera-style, three-tiered theatre and I was fortunate enough to get front-row middle seats. Throughout the evening the handful of drummers played approximately 50 different drums, and play they did! For over two hours they beat out multiple complex rhythms, sometimes whilst dancing, and occasionally intermingled with the most beautifully peaceful flute accompaniment you have ever imagined.

Now, what truly got to me was these people’s physical, mental, and spiritual presence. The drums, some two and a half meters high, hit every single person in the crowd right in the stomach. However, it was the intensity in the drummers’ eyes and muscle-strained bodies that infected the crowd with an electric energy that left everyone feeling like they had run a marathon by the end of the night. Of course all we were really doing was sitting down.

As the group assembled for a song at the front of the stage, kneeling down to play Japanese snare drums that would later take my spirit out of the body and throw it into thundering rain clouds, I saw the many faces of human perfection. Eyes like tigers’, bodies straining like bunches of twitching ropes, sweat dripping in puddles around them; I saw and felt the feeling that one feels when you have taken a certain activity to the limit. Totally entranced, as serious as one could ever be in concentration, yet smiling now and then as the realization of what they were doing, the fun they were having, and the endorphins flowing like the wind through their systems all culminated into one beautiful feeling. I tasted it in the air. I drank it in. I connected to their energies with my own, giving them all my love and appreciation. Most of all, I was inspired.

Seeing people take it ‘to the limit’ can have a profound affect on a person— as you can probably see from the way I am writing this article when recollecting that specific moment in time. Oh, the music was powerful and enchanting and ethereal, but it was the feeling of human effort and achievement that pervaded the air and minds of all those in the crowd that night. I’d have to say, without a hint of doubt, that concert was one of the best, most enlightening experiences of my thirty year lifespan. It gave me the secret, special knowledge that one day it is still possible to make my own dreams come true.

How many of us know that we can become the people we hope to become? How many of us believe that we can work at something and in the end achieve a level of greatness? Our society is currently filled with doubt, fear, skepticism and cynicism. Please don’t despair. We are fortunate that through the observance of others in our human clan, we can still see the potential that each of us has within. Why don’t you become the inspiring source for someone else who is underestimating his or her capabilities? Why don’t you be the next one to take it to the limit?

World's Longest Drum Roll

WORLD'S LONGEST DRUM ROLL !!!

On Thursday, September 11, 2003, four drummers from Oshkosh, Wisconsin will combine forces at the New Moon Coffee Company for an event of record breaking proportions. At 8:00 that morning, as the first stick touches the head, Mark Powers, Patrick Flanigan, Namiah Tribolini and Peter Buxman will begin a 12-hour feat of breaking the World Record for the Longest Drum Roll by a group.

The four drummers will be playing solo, alternating in 15-minute timeslots- two rolling simultaneously only for the purpose of transitioning between players. This will create a seamless, non-stop roll planned to not only break the current World Record of just over 9 hours, but to extend to a full half-day.

The all-day event will feature many other activities for attendees, including a practice pad station for them to roll along, a contest for the day's fastest drum roll- tracked by a drummer's speedometer device called the Drumometer, a nearby drum circle facilitated by the Oshkosh Rhythm Institute, and giveaways throughout the day.

Vic Firth Drumsticks will be supplying the sticks to be used for the day, as well as giveaways for attendees. Additional giveaway items have been donated by Latin Percussion, DRUM! Magazine and other companies.

Drum Workshop has donated a 7x12" DW Edge snare drum that the roll will be played on, and will be raffled off at 8:15 that night. Retail value of the drum is $1,270. Raffle tickets [$1 each, or 6 tickets for $5 are now available and will be sold at the event.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the music departments of Oshkosh Public and Catholic Schools and also to the Wisconsin Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.

April 21, 2004 -- Since the inception of hoop and rod type acoustic drums, tuning has been a difficult and challenging task. In fact most drummers rarely achieve the quality of sound their drums have to offer. Drum Tech introduces the new DTS Advanced Drum Tuning System, a major breakthrough in tuning. The DTS retrofits to most �hoop and tension rod' type acoustic drums, streamlining the entire tuning process. Once properly installed on drums, turning individual tension rods is no longer necessary as the DTS allows each drumhead's pitch to be raised or lowered via one adjustment. This allows drummers to play the drum while simultaneously adjusting the interval between the top and bottom heads.

The main reason tuning drums has been so difficult is because of the many tension rods around each drumhead that have to be individually adjusted. All of these rods need to be adjusted to approximately equal tension in order for the drumhead to have a clean tone. Large amounts of time are usually spent just trying to get these rods even. That is not tuning, that is equalizing. The act of tuning is normally the ability to change the pitch up or down, with one adjustment, while listening to find the desired pitch. The DTS allows a drumhead to be tuned with just one adjustment without having to individually adjust each tension rod. This saves a tremendous amount of time and permits the desired pitch to be found with ease because the full range of the head can be heard in seconds.

What is not as commonly recognized, is just how important the pitch is between the top and bottom heads. When the right tuning between the two heads is achieved, the drum will sing with a rich and full tone. Even with unequal tension between the individu"

Acoustic Or Electronic Drums - What Is Your Choice?

There are two very strong opinions regarding the use of electronic drums or drum machines. Some musicians and music producers love the use of these kits. Others, hate them, and strongly disagree with the use of electric drum sets in the mainstream music industry.

Types Of Electric Drums

The main types of commonly used electric drums are:

Electric drum sets

Drum machines are a widely used type of electric machine that have become very popular in almost all types of music. A drum machine is a small box with buttons on it that can be programmed for a variety of different sounds, and beats. A drum machine can be programmed to play a continuous loop or simply a short set.

Advantages of Drum Machines:

Convenient and portable
Easily programmable
Simulate a variety of sounds
Excellent for faster beats

Because drum machines are so small, they are extremely convenient and portable which makes them a popular choice for many musicians. For some bands, if they have to hire a drummer for live shows, it can simply be much more cost effective to use a drum machine in place of a live drummer.

In fact, in some cases when a drummer has quit the band, the band will simply use a drum machine in place of the person. This strategy is more cost effective, and often easier than dealing with different personalities.

Drum machines can be programmed for almost any sound imaginable, and with a little practice, they are easily programmable. Today�s drum machines can store a wide variety of beats, songs and programs. Therefore, an entire set can be programmed into these machines.

While electronic machines are not perfect for every type of music, they are often thought of as more effective than acoustic drums for dance music. The beats that are required for dance music are very fast and often a live drummer cannot keep up with them. In these situations, electronic machines are perfect.

Electronic Drum Sets

An electronic drum kit is another very popular form of technology that is used in drumming. These kits consist of one or more electric pads that are grouped together and create sounds when they are struck. Most of the time, traditional drumsticks are used for these kits.

Electronic drum sets can be programmed with a wide variety of sounds and can be made to sound very similar to an acoustic drum set. Often, one or two electronic drums are used alongside acoustic drums to simulate the sound of a missing drum. For example, if you do not want to lug around a large bass drum, an electric drum can be used in its place.

Controlling the volume on these sets is as easy as turning a knob to turn down the volume, which makes them the perfect drum set for apartment dwellers, or those musicians with roommates or cranky parents. Quiet practice is a big benefit of the electric drum.

Many argue that electric drum sets are tacky. Because they were first introduced in the 1980�s, electric drums quickly got a reputation of being cheesy. In addition, many believe that the only thing that electronic drums are good for is for play, but not for real musicians.

The Argument Against Electric Drums

The biggest argument against electronic drum sets or drum machines is that they lack feeling. For many musicians, playing music is all about the feeling and emotion that they can project through their sounds. They argue that when you take a live drummer and replace them with a machine, you lack the feeling and the quality of emotion.

For some types of music such as jazz and soul, machines are not appropriate at all because these are genres that exude feeling and emotional meaning in the sounds created. Therefore, many musicians feel that it is extremely tacky to use a machine in these genres.

Although a drum machine is small and portable, you cannot improvise with a machine. It is programmed to play a loop and that is it. There is not room for any impromptu changes and the rest of the musicians must be on beat, or it will be very noticeable. A machine cannot accompany a soloist either. Moreover, one of the biggest arguments with a machine is that it is not very nice to look at!

Can authentic sounds truly be replicated by a machine? That question is the basis for another argument against electronic drums. Many believe that as good as they are, computers cannot recreate an authentic acoustic drum set. Critics claim that machines sound hollow and tinny and not at all like drums should sound.

What Is The Solution?

As with any argument, there will not be a one size fits all solution. The best solution for each individual and each band is to do what they like best, and what suits their sound. Many bands and musicians have created a compromise by using acoustic drums with a mixture of electronic drum pads and drum machines. By intermingling the two types of drums, you have the technology to create some new and interesting beats, as well as the authentic sound and emotional feel of acoustics. Perhaps a compromise is the best solution to this debate.
